How many boxes of R & R cedar shingles can one guy put up in a day? Let’s say on a average 2 car garage with 2 overheads, 5 windows and 1 3068 door, leaving 6″ to weather, and hand nailing?
Guy was telling me he can do 5-6 boxes a day by himself? Is he bsing me, or are my guys slow?

On my roof which is a bit more difficult than walls being that youre in a horrible position all day..I don't remember how many boxes it takes to make a square but alone I can lay down between one and two sq "with a gun". Thats with a 5 1/2" exposure along with installing Cedarbreather and step flashing.
Depends on flashings to be done etc etc.
PS.Why don't you use a gun?????????
Be nailed

I know there have been a lot of dumb questions about nail guns, compressors, etc., but here is another: what kind of gun/compressor combo do you recommend for cedar shingles? Can you get the proper fasteners (galv/stainless) for a nail gun?
I have a hitachi nv65ah coil siding nailer. Stainless ringshank siding nails are available. Get the plastic collated ones, i have had trouble with the stainless wire jamming the driver pin too often. I have not used the gun this year yet , I will check my pressure and see if that is contributing to the jamming. Gun works great otherwise. I work slow I put up less than a square of r&r's a day.
I use a Hitachi N5008AC stapler and stainless steel staples.. I bought it based on what local contractors use and recommend.. They like staples over a single nail since with two legs there is less chance that the shingle will split and fall off. That plus every staple I see has thinner shanks than the recommended nail further reducing the tendancy to split..
In the year and a half I've had mine (and lent it out frequently to my brother in law {shingle style house with roof shingles probly has about a million or so shingles}, and nephew{just the roof of a giant garge}) it's never jammed or failed in any way.
plus I think you'vee seen picture of my house.. Some day I really should clean it since it's really filthy, but if it ever did jam the head is a simple latch and then every thing swings out of the way.. I do give it a shot of oil once in a while,... say before I lend it out and after it comes back..
As for compressors, heck I use anything that puts out air. I have a stationary Cambell Hausfeld and a Half horspower tiny little old cheap chinneese made air compressor. My brother in law uses a pancake compressor and my nephew uses a Sears craftsman..
In my opinion you can never have too big of a compressor! sure this job may only call for a little portable but once you have one I promise you that you will stretch it's abilities! My five horspower one is often too small when ever I'm sandblasting. So I hook my little 1/2 horsepower one up to it to give it a little hand. If I had one I'd like a 20 horsepower one!! (go big or stay at home, run with the big dogs or stay on the porche)

I'm using a Senco SNS45 stapler and the Senco stainless steel staples (7/16" x 1-1/2"). Locally the staples cost about $75 per box of 3000 (yow!).
javier,
I really love the new Max gun I just bought.
In fact I liked it so much I bought a second the next week.My supplier carries all the nails I need for it.
SS, galies and dbl dipped galvies.

Some guys are just fast.
I worked with one guy and saw him route, hinge, hang, and case 12 interior doors in an 8 hr day. 48 bucks CDN a door.
Now I'll believe anything...
Less than a square a day... and less than that in the complicated areas.
And what's it look like when he's done?
Hacks are fast toooooooooooooo
Too fast........

R&R's cover 1 square per box AT 14" exposure (yes that is with undercourse.)
At 6" exposure you will need about 2.5 boxes to cover a square (100sqft)
So yes, it is possible to do 5-6 BOXES a day. It depends on MANY factors, exposure, job conditions, number of projections and breaks and of course, do yoou want the corners weaved or do you have cornerboards? Is he counting setting up and breaking down the scaffold? Who's bringing him materials and cleaning up at the end of the day and job? How long is the day?
He might do 5-6 boxes on mon. and maybe tues. too.........but at some point the production has got to slow to take care of the details.

fwiw.....I just did a tear off and re-install, 32 boxes and a few other details, took about 25 days, hand nailed w/one helper.
