I recently some cedar sidewall shingles installed on a project. The Installer insisted on western red instead of white cedar, maintaining that they would last longer. I believe that western reds come from old growth trees, while white are from smaller newer growth, which might cause this difference in quality. The whotes would be considered more sustainable. Does anyone have more knowledge of the differences and whether there would be much of a difference in longevity/durability?
Thanks,

Check out the posting "Finish for Redwood Trim" by Dan Frietas for a tip on using Lifetime silicone/rubber sealer.
I think the more important consideration is waterproofing than red or white wood. "Back-Prime" the shingles with Lifetime, install, then spray the front with Lifetime. Comes with a 30 year warranty.
*wayne.. there is no comparison between the two... they have a different appearance and a different life..if you applied both to the same exposure say a west exposure, sidewall, and did nothing else to them.. the reds might last 50 years and the whites 30 years..also the reds are more stable and will lay flat and stay flat.. if you look at a white cedar wall on aunny day after a rain,,... the whites will be curled and twisted and humped.. and then a couple days later with no sun out they will be laying flat ..they are not the same and are not interchangeable..generally speaking , i wouldn't consider using a white cedar shingle on a roof, but i would and have used reds on roofs.for sidewall.. the whites are usually associated with a ((cape cod))) styleand the reds are ((victorian shingle style))b but hey, whadda i no?
*Wayne,Fine Homebuilding had an article on the subject a while ago but I can't remember which one. Can anyone help out?Jeff

Do any of you have experience with pressure treated pine shingles? I just ran across a web site (lifepine.com) that says they are much better than cedar and they back it up with a 50 year warranty. What kind of problems should I expect with a wood shingle roof? What kind of questions should I ask before I buy? I am building myself a new home and am currently pouring the basement walls. I want to put a nice looking roof on and will need to make a decision soon. Any good advice is appreciated.
