   I want to install surface mount florescents to the bottom of my floor joists in the cellar.Do i need a ceiling box or is a romex connector in the fixture and wire stapled  to joist ok? Romex connector to the fixture is fine. Also i am correct  that wire sizes 10,12,and 14 need to be ran thru holes in the joist or on 1xs fastened to the underside of the joists not just on the joists themselves?  If the cable runs parallel to the joist, stapled to the side is fine (stay > 2" from the top or bottom of joist). If the cable runs perpendicular to the joists (or at an angle) then holes must be bored or the 1x running boards you mentioned are OK. thanks guys You're welcome. Jim

   Thanks Jim, That is why I am putting up the lights, I can't see to sharpen my pencil:)
