In some of the rooms in my house, I have drywall on the walls, and have fastened 1 X 3 strapping to the ceilings. I originally intended to use wood T&G instead of drywall on the ceilings, but in some of these rooms I have changed my mind due to cost. Obviously, I can no longer use the wall drywall to support the ceiling drywall, as is commonly recommended on jobs without strapping. Is this a problem? The strapping is very secure around the perimiter of the room(s). Can the ceiling/wall intersections be taped and finished, or should the ceiling “float” independant, with the untaped intersections hidden by a moulding.
I have read here previously that the use of strapping is more common in the Northeast. How would the job have been typically done if drywall were to be used for ceilings and walls from the beginning?
