my ceiling fan makes a clicking sound. it don’t do it all the time. it will start clicking for 5 to 15 sec in a random pattern. is it the motor? brushes? does the ceiling fan need replacing? the house was built in 1999. we have only lived here a year and it has done it the whole time. thanks

Is it well balanced? There was a fan in my mother's house that made a clicking noise, which was actually a "squeak" from the unbalanced fan moving in the mount.
Beer was created so carpenters wouldn't rule the world.
I would check all of the screws that attach the brackets to the motor and the blades to the fan.
If it is not that suspect that the either the mount to the ceiling is loose or the box it'self is loose or nor most likely is not a ceiling fan box and mount.
.
A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
yeah tighten everything ,
watch the chains that dangle from the switches...for movement
tighten any screws on the light kit ,
and then balance the fan..
or run it at a lower speed

, wer ist jetzt der Idiot ?
is there a light kit? Mine has a rattle and all i do is touch the light kit and it quits. One of these days I'll dig into it more and figure out what.
probably the little screws that tighten onto the glass globes or trims ...I used some 3M high temp fiberglass tape once on a light ..the stuff is white .I also have never tried to balance a fan, unless the wobble was excessive .

yea those balance kits are a waste of time. ive never gotten them to work for me. Duct tape and pennies always works for me.
Thanks for the hint. I happen to have some of that stuff from a recent project.
