the trusses over my ceilings (rancher) are starting to show through the paint as dark lines (screws also). i don’t have an exhaust fan but do have lots of vent. i am wondering if the heat in the summer could be causing this or if i need to use a special primer (it hasn’t been long since they were painted). thanks for any help.

es- I had a repaint job that had the same problem. The house was 6 years old and the customer burned alot of candles and the wood stove went all winter. I think it was all the soot collecting on the cold spots.
Soot also collected on all the white outlets and covers in exterior walls.
Cleaned walls and reprimed everything with kilz, 4 years later everything still ok. And they dont burn candles anymore.
*pretty common.. the trusses are much colder than the insualtion between them... the indoor air pollution clings to the colder surfaces.. vacumn cleaners that discharge inside move the fine dirt particles around and give them a charge...candles , soot and cooking grease are the worst..increase the attic insulation...reduce the indoor air pollution...get a HEPA filter vacumn or built-in that discharges to the outside...then repaint..
*thanks for the info (don't think my wife will like it though). maybe i can now get rid of that hanging candle that i am always running into (in my dreams). again thanks.
*Another possible source is soot from a furnace --which should b notbe in the house air. Check for soot around/above the registers. If it's there, have your furnace checked i immediately. If not, be sure your furmace or boiler is serviced yearly.BTW, the 2 leading theories for why this happens are:1. The increased air movement at the areas with a temperature differential leads to an increased number of soot particle impacts with the surface; or2. the colder spot gets condensation before the warmer spot and thus more soot sticks to it.
