I have dropped soffits in the kitchen and some nooks. We’ll use 2×4 joists to support the 1/2″ board ceilings. Most of it is spanning about 2 feet, but in one area I will have a span of 5′-10″. Should I do 2x6s here?

I must be missing something. How does it only span 2 feet?
Any jackass can kick down a barn, but it takes a carpenter to build one.
Most are little soffit drops over kitchen cabinets, vanities, etc.
