How critical is the 1/8″ gap between cement backer boards? In a thin-set application, won’t this space be filled with thin-set and be rigid anyway?

Few people understand it. Nobody agrees what it is, how to learn about it, or who's responsible for it. It has never been more important

I suspect that the gap provides space for the thinset to fill in and make everything rigid.

My understanding is that you leave the gap so that you get a better bond with the fiberglass tape and the thinset.
