I'm a proponent of scoring and snapping with a utility knife. Use a fixed blade knife and bear down and score hard two strokes, then snap and cut through opposing sides exposed mesh to finish the cut.
Few agree with me on this but, it works very well for me. Remember to cut pieces so that a gap is left between them that is later mudded in.

*Are you talking about cement backer board or Hardiplank type sidings?Pete
*I am referring to cement backerboard used for ceramic tile
*Sorry David, I haven't used it yet. I have heard that it can be cut and snapped with a razor knife fairly well.Dust reducion is tough if you need touse a power tool though. You most likely do not want to wet it first. Perhaps you could use a circular saw with the vent fitting on the guard for dust collection bags. You could rig that to accept a shop vac hose and eliminate a good portion of the dust with the shop vac.Pete Draganic
*David,

*Like Joe, I use the carbide tipped blade. In a pinch I'll use a scrap of the backer board sandwiched between two 1X4's to dress the edge. Protect your work area-little pieces of grit are bound to fall off and scratch something if you don't.
