I hate bathrooms. So, I don’t know how to answer my brother…
Do we run cement board all the way to the ceiling in the shower/tub wet area?
If not, how high? This stuff is really heavy and I can’t believe we need to go more than the height of one sheet of cement board. But I’m the braun so I have a vested interest in keeping it low.

I'd say it depends.
How high the tile going? I usually run it just short of the tile. Say the tile is 72" high, I would run the cement board to 70" then greenboard from there. If it is going to show, greenboard finishes much nicer.
PS. The tile or surround should come up atleast 60" from the tub, or 72" from the shower pan.
what if the tile is going to the ceiling?
and what if the ceiling is being tiled? You can't hang that cement board from the ceiling.
Thanks for taking the time to answer. (Did I mention I hate doing bathrooms? I'd rather do twenty kitchens than one bathroom.)
If it is goin all the way to the ceiling, I would run the cement board to the ceiling.
Is it going to be a steam shower? If so you should cement board the ceiling.
Personally, I would run cement board everywhere the tile is going. You could probably get away with greenboard on the ceiling, but why take the chance.
Are you using cement board, or hardi-backer? Hardi-backer is much easier to work with.
cement board. not a steam shower.
You can hang that from the ceiling without the screws pulling through over time? Really?
"You can hang that from the ceiling without the screws pulling through over time? Really?"
Actually, you're better off. greenboard is about to be banned for use as a tile backer in the new IRC code. Also, if you check the code, I believe greenboard isn't allowed to span more than 12" o.c. for ceiling applications.

Funny, I come here and feel ignorant.
I log off and check my email and I feel like a genius.
I guess that says something about the company I keep...
Anyway, thanks for the helpful words. Looks like bro' and I'll be making another run to the local building supply place tonight.

I guess I'm too slow. Everyone answered.
Only one thing to add. I usually use on construction adhesive, and screws. Just for piece of mind.
Oh yeah, make sure you don't run the screws in too far, or you will compromise their holding strength.

I don't know if you have bought the cement board, but the folks here turned me on to Hardibacker, the stuff is quite a bit lighter than cement board, and I felt like you, that Durock was going to kill me.
