Roofing…I have to put a roof on a cabin in California and was wondering about the use of cement shingles. Anyone have info or links to sites? Are they easy to work with? Fireproof? Heavy?
Thanks.

They are fireproof and heavy. Define easy . once the roof is loaded they are not bad to lay and you will be glad your done. That should be the last time that you go up on the roof again. When I worked for the roofing company I did a repair job on an old 2 story that had cement shingles . the house had to be 80 plus years old and the shingles looked good as new ,almost . the repair was from tree branch damage.
I used Lifetime cement shingles on my house-Lifetime Rooftile Company 800 West 5th Ave. Suite 205 , Naperville Ill. 60540 Ph.312 369 4500 or the plant River Road, POBox470 Senica, Ill.61360 Ph.815 357 8600

Here is a pic of some cement shingles, the company is out of Minn. can find out if your interested but seeings that your in California you probably can do better with a local company. They do look great and as the previous poster said, never have to go back up on the roof.

Sorry, I meant to add that the cement shingles are pricey and there is some prep work to be done before installing, I don't know what your area is so not trying to insult but there is a certain amount of technique to installing. Let me know if you want the manufacturers name.

SplinterToo, if it were mine own roof, I'd make damn certain that the roof framing will be adequate to support the total roof load, live plus dead. Last concrete tile roof I was around, the roofer's threw a 3 year old concrete roof tile in the dump truck, and hauled it to the dump. that particular tile weighed 11lbs/sq. ft., it was too heavy for the exsiting roof framing.
