What guage size wire is generally used to connect a 3 ton AC unit to the elec. panel box? After inspecting the unit I noticed the wire was only slightly thicker than wire used for the house. Also, does central air run more effeciently/colder when the refrigerant line is shorter. On my unit the refrigerant line connecting the outdoor compressor to the indoor unit seems unnecessarily long. In other words, it can be shorten considerably. Thanks for the comments.

I am guess that would require #10.
A/C and other medicated motor circuit have special rules.
On the nameplate it will have minimum circuit size and Max breaker size.
IIRC my 2 ton is 15 amps min circuit size. So 3 ton would be about 22 amps.

A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
most of them can run off a 20 amp wire. there really not that much power going to the outside unit. I think 15 amp 220 I aleay just use a HVAC pigtail. Its a flex cord with the three wires already in it. Hook to a total disconnect.
