I had central air installed in 2006 (Unico system). The installation company came out this spring to do a check and tuneup. They had to add refrigerant, but said that’s normal. Is it normal for a new system to need more refigerant? I thought that the system was sealed and should remain full up unless there is a leak.

The short answer is no. The long answer is also no. I don't know where you live (climate wise) but if we installed a central a/c in the cool weather we would go back during the warm weather and do some final tweeking with the refrigerant. If we had installed the unit in the hot weather we would have tweeked it at the time. So if the unit was installed in 2006 I would have thought it would have been tweeked by now. Refrigerant is like air in a tire in that if you need air, what happened to the other air?
You have one of 4 things: it wasn't installed right or you have a leak or the technician didn't know what he was doing or you got ripped off.

came out this spring
That may have been the tweak roger refered to - how much was added? If more than 8 oz. you have a problem. If more needs to be added again anytime in the next 5 years you have a leak.
