Going to be putting ceramic tile in a public bathroom that had …hurumph…cough cough…carpeting that had been glued down directly to the concrete floor. Would clean scraping up the old adhesive be all that would be needed or would sanding be necessary?

rez,
If it's a large bathroom, or you have multiple bathrooms, maybe rent one of those rotary concrete etchers and make a little dust. They look like a large floor buffer and sound like the end of the world. The chemical adhesive removers can be nasty fumes, and then days of reapplying and rinsing.
Obviously, the concern is adhesion. I have razor scraped, used quality thinset with latex admix, and crossed my fingers. So far, so good.
I thought only tract home builders put carpet in bathrooms!
Thanks Skip,
Nah, there are just two 65 inch by 72 inch stool and sink in each. Really so nasty anything is an improvement. Nothing like messing with ancient particleboard sink cabinets.
Buddy plumber was telling me of a call he went on to a leaky mobile home. Seems water had been spraying on the particleboard underlayment from underneath for quite a while. He'd ask me if I wanted a job fixing the floor. Apparently the board had expanded to several inches thick and flaking. Hah, had to tell him no since I could foresee the wet board going under the walls and a house full of kids to work around. Life's too short for some stuff no matter how good the money.
