Hi,
I am able to see an edge view of the floor. There are three layers of vinyl floor with looks like 1/4″ plywood separating them. I don’t know the subfloor is. I assume 1/2″. I was going to remove just one layer (vinyl and the 1/4″ plywood). Then use drywall screws or exterior screws to secure the rest of the floor down. Then screw 1/4″ hardiboard on top for the cermic tile. What does everybody think about this.
thanks ahead for your comments.

Sounds like a mess. If I understand correctly, and the ply is above the other 2 layers of flooring, leave it and hardiback on that rather than on more vinyl. If you cant because of height, remove all the layers, and contemplate adding a new luan sub over existing subfloor. Use appropriate screws for the Hardiback, and underlayment nails on old ply if you need to retack that.
Thanks zendo,
O - the floor is vinly,1/4"ply,vinly,1/4"ply,vinly and I assume 1/2"ply. What I'm concerned about is will the "layers" make for a floor that is to weak for a cermic tile floor.
thanks again
See if you can take everytyhing off down to the orginal subfloor then add a new layer of 3/8" underlayment plywood that should support your new tile. If you are not sure use 1/2" plywood.
Take it all off, one layer will lift the other when removing it and chances are you will not get it back down as good as you would like.
Don't use gyproc screws for anything else other than gyproc, ask your building supply counter person for a proper screw for fastening plywood to floors or even nails? The flooring screw should have a non-threaded shank on the top part of it.
Thanks to everybody, looks like all the layers are coming off.
good man, then seriously consider the hardiback
What is hardi back?
Hardibacker/ Durock underlayment for tile... cement board.
I think your floor stands a good chance of developing cracks down the road from all the flex in that sandwich.
