Chain Link Fence – painting posts/rails
Hi All,
Recently aquired a new Pointer pup and I need to put up a 22′ x 50′ dog run on the side of our cabin which is located in Alpine, AZ. I got a quote from a local fence contractor for 48″ high vinyl/PVC coated chain link colored fence. When the quote amounted to $1,900 I decided that this is a job I would like to do myself.
I also just found out the the Homeowners association does not allow chain link fencing. I can, however, use wire mesh or whats called a “no-climb” fencing material. The “no-climb” is a 2″ x 4″ rolled wire mesh fencing typically used on farms & ranches. It can be stapled to 5″ or 6″ diameter wood lodgepole posts/rails or attached to steel posts/rails with wire clips/ties.
So what I would like to do is to use galvanized posts & rails (just like you would use for a chain link fence) and attach the “no-climb” wire mesh to it with the clips/ties.
Before I install the mesh, however, I would like to paint the posts & rails either a brown or green color so that it blends in with the natural surroundings (a forest).
Anyone have any idea as what the best method would be used to paint the galvanized posts & rails? Somewhere I read that they should be wiped down with vinegar first. What about some kind of metal primer? Paint type? Rustoleum? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Adam

Sounds good to me, but I would paint after the wire was installed and held in place nice and vertical. Easier and no handling after painting.
