wood.
Take doubled up 2x6 and notch the top so it fits up under and over the face of the porch roof header. Angle them down and out past your work area (but not so angled that kicking out is a sure thing to happen.
You'll need to place them on something that distributes the load (don't just stick them in the ground) Stake that "pad" you have or whatever you do to keep it from sinking and / or kicking out.
Jack up the porch slightly (enough to loosen the fit of the old columns. Cut them out or whatever's necessary to get them the hell outta there.
Stuff the fitted kicker up under that porch header, secure them up top and at the bottom. (if you use screws, use structural screws!) Don't put them where they'll get in the way of any upcoming work-they'll be there till your done.
Do your thing.
Install new posts, remember, you jacked it up a bit-figure them for when you set the roof back down (you want level, straight, whatever............)
Remove temp. hold it ups.
