Please take a look at this main support beam. This house is about 30 years old with no signs of a problem. The floor above is ceramic tile laid about 8 years ago. No signs of cracks.
I have only framed maybe 10 or so house in my life but always spaced out the 2×10’s so that 2 boards broke on top of the column.
Your thoughts?
If this is a problem what the best fix?
Thanks!!

THANKS!
Depends what loads are over it and how far back the piers supporting it are, but the splices should be more than that two feet apart.
Are those joists above it or dead into it? If the joists are comntinuopus over it, the load above is only floor with no bearing walls nearby and the piers are not far bac, that would explain why it has not failed yet.
At minimum, what I would do is get some PL premium into that gap and use clamps to pull it togehter then add some more nails there.

Piffin,
The spacing is 24". No bearing walls above. The beam sags about 1/4 " over a 8' span. May not be that uncommon.
Bill,
Stairs where taken out about the same time the ceramic floor was installed. What you are see is added support for the stair removal.
Thanks to both!!!!
Whats with the 2 joist that look like they have been added.
The one is ofset from the other joist by a couple of inches.
The 2nd on is right at the bottom of the picture and looks like it might be sistered to an existing joist.
Was there some problem that thoes where added?
