We’re redoing our kitchen floor—1906 Craftsman kitchen with some updates, but trying to go for a traditional look. I love the black and white checkered pattern but have heard some say it really shows the dirt. Looking for experience/comments and your suggestions for alternatives… thanks!

Just a top of my head remark--use checkerboard but in other colors than black and white--green and yellow, tan and brown, etc. Colors that won't show dirt as much.
Thanks, Danno. I've been thinking abt that & appreciate your comment. Will consult "Bungalow Kitchens" (Powell/Svendsen, 2000) for more ideas along this vein. Black and white are so neutral and seem so easy to commit to.. but I totally hear what you're saying!
You're welcome. Any books by Susanka will show you nice color schemes too for Craftsman style. In our house we always had nuetrals and wife really likes fuscia, so I rag-rolled (actually I used a roller covered with a plastic bag--worked surprisingly well and faster than a rag) fuscia over sterling grey in our dining room, then convinced her to be bold and we put in burgundy carpet. It is bold, but we both like it. The bad thing is that the carpet really shows dog hair (our dog is chocolate brown).
Sally, black flooring will show a LOT of dirt, and what it doesn't show the white will. Like Danno said, Craftsman colors should be earth-tones anyway. Grays and muted greens (stone and moss), beige and muted blue (sand and sea). Think about colors you see in nature. Don't see much black or white out there.

Just me and not trying to get anybody mad..
Shows dirt.. Most floors do that and what they make mops for! I say GO for it if you like it.. Suspect you will have to mop up every day... LOL
