Has anyone heard of building into an existing chimney that runs thru a living room a fireplace of brick? Right now our furnace vents into the chimney, but I plan on installing a new oil burner that vents thru the side wall of the basement. This would free up our chimney (circa 1860, which I would line w/stainless steel).
Our other option is a wood stove, but we’d prefer a fireplace.
Is this a pipe dream?
Thanks,

I seriously doubt that a masonry fireplace is a viable option, I would expect that the existing chimney would have to be removed, (circa what? and lined with what? and in what condition? and what size?). Then you need to pour a footing for the new fireplace, re-frame the floor, and most likely re-frame the chase frames for a larger flue.
Maybe you could install a pre-fab metal fireplace, if your flue is large enough.
