We have a 70’s era concrete block chimney, that was used for years to vent a fireplace. When we remodeled, we put in a woodburning stove, and ran a stainless steel pipe up through the chimney pot, and capped it off with an anti-downdraught cowl. Sometimes, though, I get the smell of creosote out of the chimney, and there are some sooty drips still coming down. Could I fill this space with a cement-type mixture? If so, what recipe, and method? There was a Great Moments in Building History about this in Jan 1998, with a minor disaster, but yielding few technical tips. Any suggestions?
p.s. I tried to post this before, but am new to the forum, and perhaps it didn’t work…

There is a mixture made for this particular application. It's basically a mortar mix with perlite used instead of sand. Most chimney sweeps are familiar with the stuff. Try googling "homesaver chimney liner". Sorry I don't have a link.
