3 feet above the ridge if it's in close proximity.
This one starts down low in a valley of the roof. Do I need to get it above the ridge if it is about 15 horizontal feet or so from the ridge? Thanks.
I'm sure it varies from state to state. Here it would be required.
Check with your local Fire Marshall or other entity to get an absolutely correct answer.
Good idea. Thanks.
gag me darlin' - you've got a big problem there. A chimney should NEVER break through the roof in a valley. It is almost impossible to flash and keep water out. Poor design like that will void any roofers warrantee.

Man, you nailed that one. That is a death wish. You might say it's a problem looking for a place to happen except it has already found one.
Good catch! Until I read oops's response I hadn't seen that the O.P. said the chimney started low in a valley! Yipes! (Funny how I was just telling you in another thread about how some people don't pick up on things and only hear a little of what is said!)
around here its three feet above anything within 10 feet.
Same around here, (N. Alabama), used to be 12 feet but they raised it to 3. Jim
A chimeny that has the flue area sized appropriately for the combustion chamber needs should have a minimu height of 14' from the top of siad chambe. Then it should be three feet above a ridge and two feet above any point withing ten feet of it.
There are locations where a regular downwid in the lee of trees or a downslope in the lee of prevailing wionds make it necessary to have a het taller stack

In Michigan, if I recall correctly, it's 2 feet above a horizontal line extending from the chimney to the nearest that roof surface, or 3 feet above the peak.
2' above any part of the house 10' away.
Thanks. This should help solve some problems.
Here in NC, it is 2 feet above the ridge or, two feet above ten feet away from the face of the fireplace.
