I have a 90 year old chimney. It’s unlined and was taken down below the roof line. I want to restore usage to the fireplace. Either through wood burning stove of wood fireplace.
What is the least expensive way to do this? I am willing to have a metal chimney through the roof.
Any help would be great.

Evan,
Is this chimney sitting on an existing fireplace or is it a,"widow maker", a chimney thats been built on a cantilevered shelf usually 4' or higher off the floor. If its the latter, they're near impossible to bring up to code around here (for good reason) and it would probably be most economical to take it the rest of the way down which is a lot easier than it might sound. So easy it will probably scare you a little if its your first. You might also want to talk to your local building dept or fire dept about your options. Alot of the fire stations around here will do free saftey inspections and our local volunteer fire station loans out chimney cleaning brushes free.

*If the chimney is structuarly sound you probably can go with a stainless pipe, and a gas insert. If you want to use wood in the existing fireplace see if ahrens has a local dealerRick Tuk
