We are planning to add a second story addition this year, and are currently in the engineering phase. My dilemna is that we have an existing corner wood – burning fireplace in our living room, which I want to keep, however if we extend the chimney straight up to comply with code, (we are adding a two story addition relatively close and taller than the chimney) it looks out of place. An architect friend recommendied using an S duct to tie the new addition to the existing fireplace. Is there anyone out there who has experience with tis kind of application? Is it cost prohibitive?? The alternate is to place a zero clearance fireplace, the kind that is self venting, inside the existing and cap the chimney

Get yourself to a local stove supplier / installer and get them to look at your plans and your existing conditions. They can provide you with professional advice and quotes on their recommendations.
