Chosing an HVAC Co., & Brand names?
My neighbor approached me today after work and asked me about getting an AC unit and new furnace, and how does he go about getting the right person. This is one area I’m very weak in so I throw it out to you all. I basically told him to do what he’s doing now and that is ask around, get names and recommendations by word of mouth. Should he go with a large Co (Sears, Trane)?, or a small guy. Names of units? I told him a few like Trane and Carrier, but like I said, this ain’t my territory. Any suggestions?

I have an American Standard. The technology and the reviews (Consumer Reports) helped out alot. I have had it three years and it is much better than my old Carrier.
Tell him to spend some time at http://www.hvac-talk.com Lots of pro's hang out there and have pleanty of opinions on what they have seen work and/or fail (e.g. stay away from Goodman). Bottom line though appears to be that the biggest variable on long life & troble free installation vs. lots of problems is the quality of the installer. A reputable company, references checked, is the most important part of the decision.
Personally, I'd stay VERY far away from those guys who send out the "manufacturer year end clearence - we have only 37 at this unbelievable price yadayadayada" junk mail. I've seen their trucks all over the place, but still...
