I need to install clapboard siding on one side of my barn to match the
other sides. Do you know of any product that is lower cost than cedar or
quarter sawn 1/2″x6″ clapboards. Since it will be painted I am not concerned if it is a composite type of material as long as it can be painted. Do you have any recommendations of materials or manufacturers?

Don't know about your area, but around here (SE US) beveled spruce is pretty readily available. Basically a 2x8 split on a bevel, you have the option of putting either the rough side or the smooth side out. Available in 12' and 16' lengths, it's a lot cheaper than the radial sawn stuff you're talking about. You do need to face-nail it to prevent cupping. We use Maze hot-dipped 10d Splitless nails and get good results.
Stuff is fairly knotty, though, and you will have to cull some so order a little extra. Spot-prime the knots with shellac to help with bleeding and flashing after painting.
Or smooth Hardie as Joe suggested-depends on the look you're after.
Good luck,
Bill
