What should I use to clean the protective oil off of galvanized hangers, bases etc? Doesn’t paint thinner leave oils after it evaporates?
after I clean them, I’ll wash them with vinegar to etch the galvy before priming/painting.

don't have a dishwasher. good idea though.
You might try Dawn dishwashing soap.
I've used it to clean oils off of various items.
Rumor was, that it was used during the Exxon Valdez cleanup.

Dawn is made to deal with animal fats. Petroleum is a whole different ball game. So I think this whole thing about using dawn is total BS.
My mind not only wanders, it sometime leaves completely.

If dawn won't work, try Dusk.

I've had good results using Dawn to clean up motor oil from the car. With all this kind of stuff, it can't hurt to try a little test.

"BH been cranky of late..."
Oh shut up.
I have NOT been cranky.
It's everyone else, not me...
STRESSED is just DESSERTS spelled backward.
Tried checking Snopes for a story on Dawn and the Exxon oil spill cleanup.......no story dedicated specifically to this situation....but in another story that came up while searching, I got this:
Dawn was indeed used to degrease otters caught up in the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill, and the detergent was also used to remove oil from penguins and cormorants rescued after the Sydney Harbor oil spill in 1999.
BS indeed Boss......in this case Been Snopesed.

All well and good.....but its worked for me on plenty of stuff that doesn't fall into the "animal fats" genre.

Most coat hangers are just painted or coated steel. Why do you want to clean them?
On the other hand, if you are talking about aircraft hangers, you need big brooms, a pressure washer and a 32 ounce mop. Charge by the hour and take your time.

Simple Green is the standard degreaser at my family's metalwork shop.
Castrol Superclean. Similar to oven cleaner.
