I don’t like roofing but I have the utmost respect for roofers. Having said that, I have been unable to secure a roofing contractor to roof my addition and so I am the guy. I am seeking a definitive answer to my particular valley scenario. Specifically, I plan to install closed cut valleys on my roof but am having difficulty determining which roofing plane should be cut. The main roof is gable to gable with a 12 in 12 pitch. There are cross gable dormers on either side of the main roof in a carpenter gothic style that are an 18 in 12 pitch. The area of the plane of the main roof is greater than the area of the plane of the dormer roof. My gut feeling is to run the shingles from the main roof up the dormer and overlay and cut the dormer shingles. However, the advice from a qualified professional would help to allay any concerns I have. Thanks in advance for your help.

You have it correct.
My gut feeling is to run the shingles from the main roof up the dormer and overlay and cut the dormer shingles.
This may be the only time Walter and I dissagree, but the "rule" is lay the minor plane first and cut the major plane.
The thinking is there will be more water running "over" the cut that way rather than running "into" the cut.
All that being said, I've seen it done both ways and if everything else is done correctly, I wouldn't fret too much about the cut being done "backwards".

I didn't catch the 18/12 - 12/12 ratio the first time.
Nevermind - you had it right the 1st time. Carry on.

I almost had to dope-slap that young guy see you there. I'm glad he corrected himself, cause he's bigger'n me!
;)
Lay the steeper pitch lapped over the lesser pitch as you planned. When both pitches are equal, the larger roof plane overlays the lesser.
