I have had some requests lately for some high end custom closets. Looked at ProClosets on the web. Just wondering what everybody else thinks about putting in closets and if they build their own shelving and such or do you buy from someplace.
There seams to be a good market here for such a product but I couldn’t believe how high their prices were.
Any thoughts and opinions appreciated as always.

I luv ya Greg - - nicest closets I've seen were the ones Dad built for Mom - - double sliding doors, cedar lined, tall hanging compartment with shoeshelves below, short hanging compartment with shoe shelves below and shelves above - a bank of drawers for things that need drawers with shelves above - -
this is in an old farmhouse, dad took the wall between two upstairs bedrooms and made it about 4' deep - app 32" deep closet in each room with bookcases with drawers below opposite it in the other room - - so adding closets to both rooms - -
I think a more desirable situation is the walk-in, but that requires circumstances not always availible - -"there's enough for everyone"
Have you seen the Elfa stuff? Very high end. Ultra cool way to do a closet. Check it out at http://www.containerstore.com/browse/index.jhtml?CATID=72388
Real men build from scratch !!
I TOTALLY agree with TR!
Build it from scratch and do it well!
Buy sheets of melamime and rip them yourself to any custom size you want. A couple sheets, and you can customize any closet ,stock and labor, for the COST of some of the pre-fab units. (of course you charge alot more!)
God Bless America!
as it is ... I've never outfitted a closet as a stand alone job ...
But ...
I do shake my head the "closet guys" come into a job I'm subbing ...
and see all that basic melamine hung off the walls ... with those cheap knock together drawers ... then walk out with a check for a coupla thou.
and ... the "custom designs" ... never take full advantage of the space ...
nothing custom about sizes in 2 ft incriments ....
I'd bet with a coupla pictures or real "custom" .... real wood products ....
with a similar install syaten as the big outfits ...
You'd be pretty busy once the word got out.

I do make true wood custom closets, but never tried to market them. Always part of a bigger remodel.
Thought maybe a "system" would be easier to market.
I could always buy the hanging rail system they use and design my modules to work wiht it. Installation would fly then.

Greg,
We just bought ProClosets and are in the process of installing them. They're spendy, but the alternative was to go with one of the bids we got from vendors locally. ProClosets suddenly looked downright cheap. Since I designed them online, I got really familiar with the products. I did alot of custom sizes, and was able to get exactly what I wanted. We placed two separate orders, starting with the kids closets. If it turned out we didn't like them, at least we wouldn't have to have them in ours. But we do like them.
We also have an abundance of Elfa storage, and we like that, too. Unfortunately, we have no Container Store in Seattle, and retail prices plus shipping made Elfa too expensive. (They usually have a 30 % off sale in January, and 20% in Sept. but they were still too much.)
Chouter
Thanks for all your opinions. They are really appreciated.

Katz had a article in FHB not to long ago on this subj. He made his outta MDF and painted. But I think a nice ply with wood edgeing and finish would be the bomb along with some aeromatic ply on the walls or the cab backs

I just did my first major DIY closet reno.
My master BR is narrow and the queen size bed I have takes up alot of space. The old closets (a former owner DIY project I think) had those nasty bifold doors. I knocked down the wall dividing the two closets and made one big one. I reframed the opening and found a quality track system for three sliding doors. The Stanley system is garbage.
I used real panel doors - not those crappy thin ones.
Looks like million bucks!!!!!!!
I will be replacing the doors at a friends house also. She doesn't like the "porno" look that mirror glass doors give. An ex boyfreind used to stare at the mirrors when they were doing it, something that she found off putting, she told me.
I used Rubbermaid wire shelving products from HD. I looked around and liked them the best. Give a nice open feel to the closet. The wood dividers and shelves feel much more enclosed.
My girlfreind wanted pull out wire baskets. The wire baskets and frame came from Ikea. Rubbermaid makes an unit but it cost twice the price.
If you have the skills to build the cabinetry of a custom closet then you have no need for anyone elses system. Snap together pieces in limited available dimensions place the dollars in the pockets of others, not you.
You can, of course, glean ideas from others but I would not give more than a cursory look to the the majority of the "Closet Maid" knockoffs.
If you want to see some really better stuff I would suggest a look at the DCOTA Clutter Control. There is a showroom in Dania, FL and I'm pretty sure you can find something to look at on the internet.
Those modular installations, IMHO, are a dime a dozen. I've done some and I even think Jeff Buck could drop a notch and bang some together.
gwerner,
I recently built a custom closet for DGF.
There are 5 rods, the entire door wall is framed with 1x6 for shelving, the wall behind the longest clothes hanging zone is floor to ceiling shelves, the wall above the chest in Closet_Interior.jpg is shelves. The shelf above the long upper rod in Closet_Exterior.jpg wraps around the end. There is a rod (not seen) above the chest for short clothes.
I wanted to put floor to ceiling shelves in the back of the closet but she wanted bedroom floor space.
I framed the door itself with 2x4s to give a little return inside the doors, which still aren't up.
I have decided that any closet I frame will be framed with 1x6 shelving from now on. As an added bene for me, I will have to DW one side only.
I routered all the verts then cut them to fit the uneven ceiling.
In order to support the lowest rod, bottom left in Closet_Exterior.jpg, the left side of the boot box has an upper extension cut into it and the other end of the rod is supported by a HD shelf bracket.
Hope this gives you some ideas.

Thanks everybody.
I think I'll just keep making my own and just maybe try to market them a little bit. Never know, might find a niche thats not filled here yet.Greg

Nice, I like the bottom detail.
Especially hard when they're already full.

Yeah, nice lines, Piff.
I used the same thought on the piece of boot box thatI used for the rod support, Of course I did a much neater job on the woo than in my drawing below 'cuz I used coffee cans for my arcs there.
