Customer had a basement window that was below grade and would leak in heavy rains. She didn’t want to keep it, so we just closed it in (cinder blocks, mortar, parge coat and paint). It came out pretty good.
New customer wants the same job. The only catch is that it’s under a deck about 3 feet above grade. This one only leaks air, but it’s starting to decay because of the high moisture. I really don’t want to work under there so I’m trying to think of a way to take a shortcut.
For example, cement backer board mortared in place. I don’t really think this would work since it’s really not strong enough to backfill against. If I can’t come up with an idea, I’m going to turn down this job. Removing the deck boards is not an option because it would put her over her budget.
Any ideas?

I did one under my deck from inside the basement. Bricked up a course to close it up on the outside, then made a form 3/4 way up & poured concrete in. After it set up, moved the form up and poured again. Filled the balance in with aero foam.

You're a clever one, Jeff. You managed to say so much with so little. It's as if you know me and know that a shortcut will haunt me.
