Matt,
I usually have the propane guy run the lines. They are usually cheaper. Some will also give you a hot water heater and discounts on other things like gas logs. They also know all national and local codes.

*My propane company runs all my lines, even interior. The propane installed sales guy knows all the code requirements, including FIRECODE. Besides Bldg. Code, you sometimes get into Fire marshal and zoning enforcement, so I rely on his advice .He often points out obvious improvements too, which I had missed, and its all part of the service, so we take advantage of it.We do the trenching and backfill, and provide the sand bed and overlay.
*Thanks all for your responses. My CABO book doesn't have any specific info - what it does say is that it is the responsibility of the NC Dept of Argriculture. So, as you all suggested, I called a LPG supplier. Got some info.: 3' from a foundation (crawl space) vent, below any window (need some clarification here) and 10' from any ignition source - such as a gas appliance. Sounds like getting a LPG Co. to do the complete install is the way to go, I'd just like to make the decision (or have some idea) of where the cylinder will be placed prior to the install.

Does anyone know the building/mechanical code requirements (limitations) for placing an LP gas bottle (tank) next to a single family dwelling? I know that there is a minimum distance(s) from windows, doors, and foundation vents but I don't know the specifics. The bottle is for an LP gas fireplace. CABO code rules in my area. I need to know where to have the HVAC guys run the line.
I live in NC.
