I remember an article in JLC or FHB about building a coffered ceiling, but I can’t get to the back issues. I think of a coffered ceiling as one with a series of deep picture frames, like exposed beams in both directions.
My thought is to use crown moulding inside the squares, with a 2×2 tin ceiling panel for the flat ceiling. Box it in with 3/4″ bitrch ply for the sides and bottoms of the beams. It will be painted.
Question is … how do I attach it to the ceiling joists? I can screws furring strips across the joists, but what about parallel to the joists?
I’m sorry, I thought you wanted it done the right way.

Ed, this is an article Gary Katz wrote on the subject. It's what came to mind when you said coffered ceiling. Searching FHB and JLC brings up lots of other options too.

It was in the back of one of the FHB's within the last year. Gary might also have some stuff on his website, http://www.garymkatz.com
If it's gonna be painted why not use soemthing cheaper than 3/4" birch ply - MDF maybe?
Thanks Mike. I let my JLC subscription lapse, but I remember seeing that article. It was probably in my last issue.
Diris ... I don't like how the mdf mushrooms when it's nailed, and I don't like messing with the weight of a full sheet and the dust, so I'll probably use something else.

Light weight MDF is available. Around here it is called Trupan.

The parallel members are attached to the perpendicular members and construction adhesive to the sheetrock
