Matt, Great job on the ceiling, I think I would have brought my mother over to see it too! Just wondering why the plans called for a sub-structure with a sheetrock wrap? Fire? I’ve done a few but always with 1x clear-dry pine or poplar after the sheetrock on the lid has been hung and finished (saves rockers and tapers a lot of work). Regardless, beautiful job, keep the photos coming!

Thought some of you might like to see how a project discussed here came out. Below are some pictures of the coffered ceiling that we talked about in a < Obsolete Link > previous thread. This ceiling really made that house and everyone who walked in had something to say about it.
Special thanks to Ed Williams for giving me some ideas about how to frame it (use plywood) and Joe F. for the pictures that gave me an idea of how it might look being covered with sheet rock.
Didn't have a camera before so I couldn't get pictures before the move in... still haven't figured how the date function works on the new camera. May have to resort to reading the instructions!
*Here is another picture. It's what you see when you walk in the front door.
*MattBeautiful job...very classy. I like the way the mid span beams are stepped, and the way you handled the fan (too bad the fan itself is kinda tacky). What was the final choice as a cover for the beam boxes.-pm
*That looks nice Matt. I love it when you guys post photos.

*Nice use of a "previous thread" link, too. You know, this brings, like, closure... The pictures will look great in my portfolio! (Just kidding!)Oh, and beautiful work! Wish my ceilings were over 8'. Here, coffered would = concussion.PLEASE talk them out of the UGLY fan. Or at least get some classy lampshades from somewhere like rejuvenation.com.
*isn't your hairdo your "coifature" or something like that? Is there some connection there?
*All: Thanks for the compliments. JB: That went right "over my head"; sorry for the pun. I looked it up: it's *coiffure*, which means hairdo or head dress. I'll have to add that to my vocabulary :^).Patrick: Not sure what you mean. The false beams are covered with sheetrock per the plan drawing I posted in the original post. The sheetrock hanger said: "Why did you do this?." The sheetrock boss man said "This is how much it's gonna cost!"By the way:The ceiling height was 10' before the coffer detail was added. It is quite a large room and the design goal was to "close it in" a bit. There was definitely some discussion about the fan, but there didn't seem to be anything better readily available. It is a very well known brand that used to represent quality. You probably can't tell from the picture, but the "brass" looks about as realistic as something from a $1 store. The coffered ceiling took about 16 man hours to frame alone. There is a S*load of blocking above the false beams for nailers. The (young) guy who helped me frame it was so proud of the way it came out that he brought his mother over to look at it! It made me feel good that I had perhaps instilled some pride in workmanship. The house has some other cool details like window seats with storage, 2 other types of trey ceilings one of which has indirect lighting, a built in TV nook in the bonus room, and some really nice brick detail on the exterior.
*Matt, That's a very nice detail to the ceiling. Nice job, and thanks for posting it.My view on ceiling fans is I prefer no lights of any kind on them, especially in "public" rooms. The only place I'd consider lights on a fan is in a small bedroom, where you need a switched light and room constraints dictate a ceiling light.Back to the topic...nice job!
*Ditto on all the nice things about the ceiling fan detail, and overall nice job.I kind of like ceiling fans if ceiling height permits, especially since I don't have central AC, and the breeze gets me through all but the hottest days, but if not, they can always use the same spot for some other lighting fixture later. The best thing about the job is what you said about your young helper. It's those experiences which establish a work ethic, regardless of what trade he ends up in.
