eric:
Generally, collar ties go in the upper 1/3 of the roof.
Are you saying that the roof slope is 2.5" of rise in 12" of run?
*b TVMDCExcellent question. Pitch is the ratio of rise to total span and is expressed as a simple fraction. Slope is the ratio of rise (in inches)to run (in inches).
*Bill:Well... yea, right you are, although many people don't know that, and I have even seen slope and pitch used interchangably in text books. Therefore, usually I assume that someone is refering to the rise/run ratio (slope), regardless of which of the two terms they use - especially when they state it in terms of "6 in 12" or similar - which eric did not. I was really just trying to find out how steep (flat) the roof was as I would have to question a 2.5 in 12.
*If this roof is a 2.5 in 12, forget collar ties, there is no room for them and they won't do any good anyway. The RAFTERS ( I'm starting to think you meant "how long should the rafters be?) would rise less than 3 feet from plate to peak over 13 feet of run. You hardly have room for joists!MD
*Then I reckon he'll need 26'7" collar ties right atop the top plates.
*hee hee Pete, the third definition of collar ties is: ceiling joists!
*Pete's right the collar ties are still necessary unless you have a self supporting ridge. In this case they would be your cieling joist which are your best tie anyway, imho.
*Maybe he should just order a truss package. He'll need all the room he can get if he plans to run HVAC ducting up there
