I have a job to repair and refinsh two 3’0″ x
8’0″ mahogany doors at the entrance to a condo.
I need to take the doors down for the repair
and will work on them in my shop. The problem is
the doors hang on knuckle type hinges with a
self closing pivot on the bottom. It seems to
be a typical commercial heavy duty set-up ,but I
have never taken down or worked on this sort of a system and don’t know where to begin. Can anyone
help me give any leads?

There are a few diff set ups to what you mention. If it were me and I couldn't easily figure how to take them down, I would call my buddies at a commercial glass co. and enlist their help. Are these hinges located at the top and bottom of the door? I think I understand you but need a little more. Also, the hinge is how the doors are adjusted side to side. With double doors, I think you should let someone familiar with them take them down and re-install to get that perfect fit.
*If they do seemed to be permanently pinned at top and bottom, sometimes on of those pins is on a spring and can be pushed into the door. But as Calvin said, there ar alot of different set ups.Look in a hardware catalog, find the hinges and you can figure it out from the pictures.

Hey Matt, is their a closer in a floorbox (a chrome or aluminum plate would indicate it's presence) If so, relieve the tension on the closer. It sounds like you have either center or offset pivot hinges. Usually, the door will release from the top pivot. There are a few different kinds. Here in Chicago, the prevailing pivot hardware is manufactured by Rixsson (double-check that spelling) that might be a good place to start. Also, Hager makes pivot hardware. Let us know how it turns out.
