As a part of our remodeling project, we are building a new kitchen wing, one of the features of which will be a 48″ gas range that my wife wants. I know this range requires a 48″ hood and some sort of venting mechanism. The stove will be flush to the wall so my preference will be for a wall mount hood. My question is which trade do I speak with about th ducting for the hood, at what time to I broach the subject, and when should the ducting go in? I think these duct systems need some sort of 600 cfm blower motor unit as well. The kitchen addition will be a one story deal with a shed type roof. Ideas as to venting placement would be helpful too. Thank you.

Be sure you consider the impact of a true "commercial" range in your plans. They usually need a larger gas line, and all of those extra BTUs might affect your HVAC loading to the point you have to add some additional cooling. Then there is the question of make-up air for that 4-foot hood and its not-so-whimpy exhaust fan.

The commercial fans I have installed sat on top of welded (no seams) duct work that also had to be insulated.
The fans themselves were of a type that needed a curb to sit on top of on the roof and the fans also had a grease trap built in. The fans and the duct work were suppiled by the HVAC contractor and I wired them up. these fans can create a vaccum

One more thought,
Your town might require fire supression on this hood, which is another shop to deal with, which would require additional wiring of things like a gas valve solenoid, shutting down the supplied air fan...the make up air, shutting off any electrical outlets near the stove and notifying the fire dept. Of course these are things that you will find in a commercial kitchen ...."
If this is a TRUE commercial range then you need to get the specs on it NOW!
They often don't have the insulation needed for residential usage. Might not pass code and if it does it might not be allowed up against ajoining cabinets, etc.
If it is just a "commercial like" range then 48" vent hood with built in fan or with external fan are commonly avaialble.
