What can you tell me about compressed air cylinders for running air framing nailers? Are they a good idea for small jobs rather than a Paslode impulse nailer? What size air tank works the best?

I would recommend you get a small compressor instead. They have some light ones around 100 dollars that will work for light use.
I've got an adapter that lets me chuck a regulator with 1/4" NPT airline fitting into the low pressure BC whip on my scuba reg. For small jobs the scuba tank isn't much lighter than a compressor, but it's quiet and convenient. You can run a few hundred nails from a framing gun pretty easy out of one tank. the adaptor was about $15.00. If you've already got the cylinder, go for it.

Do not do that with the big green tank next to the red one..trust me.
