I’m going to build a free standing patio (pergola) mounted on six concrete or block columns. The columns will be covered with a cultured stone.
Originally, my plan for the columns were to use 16″x16″x8″ blocks stacked to the correct height and filled with concrete with rebar in each corner. The footings would be deep enough to ensure stability. However, thinking about it more leads me to this scenario about the columns: Since the blocks are going to be filled with concrete, why not just build plywood forms for the columns? The forms will be 16″x16″xcolumn height (~7′). This scenario eliminates lugging the heavy blocks around. Either way, I’m going to have the concrete pumped in.
Which way do you think is easiest, block, plywood forms, or?
Thanks, Art
