I am interested in feedback regarding the use of first floor joists on a raised foundation as form boards for the concrete foundations. With 30 years of experience in California we have used this practice carefully stripping and cleaning the form boards and reusing them as floor joists. Does anyone agree or have heard that they can not be used?

arrdog,
Oil them well, or they will cup like crazy as one side soaks up the water from the pour. Use an oil that doen't stink too much, or for too long. This has been done for a very long time, and I think it works best with smaller sizes of lumber because of the swelling issues. I see a lot of joists and rafters that were reused formboards, mostly 2x8 and smaller.

Some peeps put deisel fuel on to help protect them too..........
I don't think there would be any prob.
I've seen forms reused for rafters and framing. When in doubt, get a bigger hammer!
I've seen it done. Not good for the sawblades if you just let it get full of concrete. I wrapped mine in 6 mil black poly, which kept the wood perfectly clean, and kept it from pulling water out of the mix. Poly in the forms impressed the inspector.

;)I'll bet he wasn't so dazzeled that he didn't notice the lack of rebar...

Huh? The rebar was there, perhaps a bit more difficult to see against the black background.

This has certainly been the practice in some areas for decades. I know the did it commonly in the 50s when I was a kid in the Louisville KY area.
I've done it numerous times. Don't use form oil, the smell lasts too long when the boards are installed for joists. I wrap the joists with poly, staple the poly to the joist.
