rez,
I made several models of variations and wound up with a dormer that extended about 32 inches out, the dormer roof peak was at the same height as the roof line then dropped down into a cone that reflected the cone it was on.. the front of the dormer followed the curve of the cone underneath it. A modification of the other dormers on the roof.
Everything else wound up in conflict with something.. Eyebrow dormers simply wound up looking contrived, the pitch of the roof of the eyebrow was in conflict with the pitch of the cone it was on and the best that could be said was they looked like a cyclops eye. Straight dormers looked so out of place sort of like a helmet on a pretty girl.. I even looked at putting a roof window in flush with the roof (now wouldn't that have been a nightmare to seal?) Because I couldn't get glass at a price I could afford it wound up being flat panels and that just looked despreate.
Seems straight forward to frame so it won't take long to do although there is absolutely nothing that can be pre made. so I'll be spending my time between now and the removal of road restrictions doing raised panel work on the tower..
It looked a bit challenging.
Will enjoy the pics sometime in the future. ;o)

Frenchy, could you do a crenelated turret instead, like on an old castle? Seems like it would fit right in with the look you're going for:

Woodguy,
Too late, the permits already in my hot little hands and since it took me 9 years and 43 trips to get I don't think I'll change anything. ;-)
What's the latest on the home front?
be pun intended:o)
However, if one designs to construct a dwelling-house, it behooves him to exercise a little Yankee shrewdness, lest after all he find himself in a workhouse, a labyrinth without a clue, a museum, an almshouse, a prison, or a splendid mausoleum instead.

rez,
Road restrictions have been lifted and as soon as the excavator arrives the foundation goes in.(hopefully this week)
I am extremely proud of how I am planning on building the foundation.. Creative, innovative, and cheap!
Well hey. don't keep us in suspense.
I'm all for learnin'.
be leaning to learnin'.
.In the savage state every family owns a shelter as good as the best, and sufficient for its coarser and simpler wants; but I think that I speak within bounds when I say that, though the birds of the air have their nests, and the foxes their holes, and the savages their wigwams, in modern civilized society not more than one half the families own a shelter.
