   Do you only make things out of MDF?  Carpenters in  the Okanagan Valley may have broader skills . . .

   Matthew Daniel Ford contracting. Purely coincidental I assure you. However, I am sure that you would be astounded by the percentage of millwork in calgary done with that stuff. Pretty much only really high end homes get done with anything else.

   preprime mdf #356 2 1/4 casing gets used for everything including baseboard.

   I don't live in the Okanagan, but have some idea as to what is going on in BC in general.

   The downturn in residential construction you have experienced in Calgary had also been severe in Vancouver and the major towns in the Central Interior - especially those that had the largest building booms in the past few years. According to CMHC estimates these areas will not show recovery for at least a year, and to my mind they are being optimistic. The only bright spots right now are the large projects such as the Olympic related construction that promises steady employment until 2010, when everyone hopes the worst will be over.

   Even in the midst of BC's boom it was exporting skilled trades to Alberta, and many of them are returning home now. There are just way too many people employed in construction in both provinces to be sustainable, and that means scarce work and lower wages.

   All this is of course just generalizations. Even in rough times a skilled carpenter might find good work in the Okanagan, but it just means the odds are longer.

   The reason for moving really doesnt have much to do with work, I've got a pretty good thing going here in Calgary. It's more just that DW is from there and really wants to make the move. Just tryin to kick some tires to find out if I can get the same dough out there. Your reasoning is pretty hard to argue with though.

   Then again using my reasoning I wouldn't suggest anyone move to Calgary either. Glad you are doing well there. I guess right now is a good time to be holding on to what you've got.
