We hed our sewers hooked up this week. The excavation was a 30 foot long, two foot wide, 8 foot deep trench. After refilling the trench we now have a ridge of dirt approx. 4 feet wide and roughly 4 feet tall.
Since it wasn’t tamped as it was filled, I know it will settle a whole lot. I am looking for suggestions on speeding up this process.
I am thinking of hooking a water hose to a 3/4 inch pipe, then reducing it to 3/8 inch, and injecting water under the pile immediatley over the trench. I don’t want to move the pile and start tamping it in, the way it should have been done. It is also not worth argueing with the plumber over. He was so cheap, I almost feel sorry for him.
Any other suggestion would be welcomed.

well, if you don't want to move the dirt at all, that jetting idea you have is gonna be your best bet. Messy, but it should consolidate the dirt somewhat for you. Unless you have a high clay content. Then it will be really messy.

as wolvie said.. you've run out of options...if you can't compact it in layers.. flooding is your only choiceMike Smith

Thanks Mike and Wolvie. I just wanted to see if I was missing something abviouse. This house is going on the market in three weeks, so I want toat least get the front yard leveled out and some grass started on it.
Hey, what about the "For Sale" sign on a four foot high mound with a flood light? :)

Dave, it is NOT going to level it out. You may consolidate it some, but you probably won't get rid of even half of it. That dirt was packed together real well over what period of time? Just turning it to mud ain't gonna do the trick. Good luck. Joe H
Put on your best Bill Murray Clothes, and pretend your hunting for gophers.... Big ones. While youre at it, get one of those old mole traps(you know the three knives that guillotine the mole in the hole when he trips it) and put it up top and take a picture. Have fun with it at least.
Bill Murray in Caddyshack flooded out that gopher you might as well too...
Anyways, youre gonna have to do the water thing or revert to re doing the layering by hand. You might have to dig some holes to get the water down low at first. let the weight of the dirt on top collapse the material.
He was probably cheap for a reason... he isnt a landscaper....
Ya, Joe, I know it won't level it out. If I can get it down to half its present size, I'll stock pile some of what is left in a coner of the back yard. The rest I'll loose in the various low spots.
I did some Bill Murray stuff around here in my younger days. It had to do with driveway drain tiles and ditch lines being blocked up. My neighbor and are at the high point of the drainage plane in a basicaly flat developement. It was kind of funny. Not a one of them came out in the pouring rain to stop the mad man with the shovel in thier front yards. Most of the teenagers still avoid me. Thier parents told them how crazy I was way back then, but those are stories for the tavern.
I'll try to post some before and after pics.
