I had a landscaper install a half acre of Canary Island Palms on my lot. He was suppose to bring a mulch to cover the bare soil for weed control. What he brought was chipped up conctruction debris; particle board, plywood, tree parts and a fair amount of trash; plastic bags, bottle caps, and other plastic/metal trash mixed into the above. He is talking about cleaning out the trash, but I am concerned about the de-gradeable nature of the plywood and particle board chips. Will they degrade and is it poisonus to the soil when they do? GW

Check with your County Extension Office. That is sponsered by the state land grant colledges and is an very good free service for out tax dollars. A lot of them have master gardener programs.
If you can't find it in the phone book then do a google on "California Extension Service" or "California Cooperative Extension". That will get to the state offices and they should have links or address list of the county offices.
