I’m getting ready to trim my renovated cape and I’m looking for some suggestions on a product for my soffit vents. I will be using 1/2″ Azek or Nels-Tek sheet stock nailed to the bottom of the rafters/lookouts and most of the aluminum soffit vent that I have seen at local lumber yards and orange & blue stores looks kind of flimsy and is designed for 3/8 soffit material. I am hoping to tap some of the local knowledge here at Breaktime Forum for suggestions on a more durable product that will work nicely with 1/2 inch stock for my soffits.

Darin,
Have you looked at Hardi vented soffit. It works great and plenty of vent holes. I'm not experienced with exterior grade sheetrock so i can't really interject there.

last time I used Aztec ....
we got some 2" by 8' metal vent strips from the lumber yard .... they were white aluminum ... with the vent slots punched in them ....
I just cut out a strip running down the middle of the soffit .... started a coupla inches from each end ... as the designer wanted a "continous" and "seamless" look ... so I left that room at the ends for the miters .... looked really sharp.
Dropped the vents in from the top .... let them set over lunch siliconed in place ... then just set them in place.
The parts and pieces have to be cut and fit before the vents are layed out ....
But installation is no harder than an unvented soffit ... once lifted ... nailing them tight holds everything in place.
This install makes for a recessed look ... about 1/4 inch .. very clean

Jeff,
We use them all the time around here in NJ. Most of the time I notch out the back of the fascia so that the lip of the soffit vent will sit in it and then we nail the other end of the lip into the bottom of the rafters or outriggers. After that we will nail whatever soffit we're using on top of that lip.
Sometimes we center the continuous soffit vent and put soffit on each side.

Darin...Hi. I am an old carpenter that once worked in Fla. , and as side note the inspector would not allow vented soffit above any door or window openings and one foot to either side. He said it was a fire hazard and would act as a chimney in the event of a fire in the home and transfer the flames directly to the truss's and would cause premature collapse of the truss.s. I now live and build in central Illinois and I have never heard of this here or anyplace else for that matter but it m,ade sense to me and I follow his advice/requirement . The people here have given you good advice and I learn something new/different all the time . good luck.
