I’m planning on putting a flagstone walk over existing concrete. The concrete walk is about three years old and in good shape (no cracks, heaving, etc.).
What I’m not sure about is if I need to lay the stones so they match the control joint with a mortar seam. Or do I not worry about it?
Obviously I don’t want cracking in the stone walk, but since that’s what a control joint is for, it got me to wondering.

Froed, I'm thinking that if you are concerned about uncontrolled cracking in the flagstone joints, you could always through down a floating slipsheet over the fairly new concrete walk. This could be as simple as a polyethylene sheet not adhered to the existing walk put down before the flagstone. That, my friend, is the short of it. To answer your question, I wouldn't worry about it too much.
BTW: How do you plan on installing the flagstone? What materials?
*Rich,Thanks for the info. I know I wouldn't have though of that. Since the walk is in good shape, I'm simply planning on using a sand mix mortar over the walk to bed and point the flagstone. The stone itself is called "crab orchard" I think. At least that's what it's called where I got it in Cincinnati. I don't know if the names change regionally or by supplier. It's mostly pinkish, with some white and brown thrown in. And it's fairly soft, so I don't think I'd use it where there's more than just foot traffic. Maybe that doesn't follow, but in my inexperience that was the impression I got.Froed
