I am about to use a water heater to heat a single zone 20 by 20 family room. Concrete on 2 inch foam. What should I use to dial the system in in terms of controls? a timer?, stat? what about water temp for the slab?

I recommend you read this article over at JLC (sorry, Andy). It covers the topic fairly well and may help you on your way to a comfortable setup.

*Consider a Danfoss MT? Thermostat that senses slab temperature. I bought one today for a similar set up. The instructions say to put the sensor in conduit, easy if the slab isn't poured yet. Is radiant to heat the room or just the slab? You might also pose the question at Heatinghelp.com.
*We just fired up a 1500 s. ft suspended slab on Friday using a power vent 63000 BUT American DHWH. My first one, but I just hooked up the thermostat to a low voltage control unit that turns on the Grundfos pump. The textbooks say you should be shooting for about 135 degree I water hemp that leads to a 85 degree slab hemp. I haven't had the chance to play with mine yet, but it seems to be working. The water hemp is supposed to be set by the DHWH thermostat. I used Radiate Crop out of New England for supplies and etch support. The Etch support was invaluable. Em-ail me if you want. Keep it simple.AS The taut on spell checker thinks hemp should be spelled hemp. Coincidence, I think not!
