Copper and red cedar compatability

theslateman | Posted in Construction Techniques on August 17, 2009 11:34am

I’m not that used to pairing copper with red cedar roof shingles  — it’s usually used with slate for me . So my question is  :  have you had bad experiences using bright copper and red cedars for the roofing above it ??

Client was considering Revere Evergreen , but is now leaning towards just copper .

Thanks for any and all responses.

Walter

Not what I'd call a BAD exp. but the copper gets streaks where the tannins run across it , like in a valley. It seems to stay a bit shinier or less chocolate where the rain runs.

Obviously the copper also keeps the moss from growing on the north sides as well. As far as I'm concerned they go together well with each other.

      Duane ,

Thanks for the feedback . Looks like my client isn't going to want Evergreen , for which I am very happy .

I haven't used enough reds to know how it reacts , but thought I'd remembered that there were some issues with combining the two .

I'd hoped Grant would weigh in too .

Can you channel him for me ?? <G>

Walter, Grant seems to be AWOL, I've emailed him about some work related stuff and not heard back yet. I saw he posted once since the fest , but that was all I saw.I just emailed him again and may have to call him tomorrow if I don't hear back.I wonder what Gunner did to him? Broke his fingers or what? You'll know when I know.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

He could be in jail, we have a builder here who owes both me and Gman a pile of money, Gman may have collected in flesh. He was pretty PO'ed before the fest about the deal.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

My experiance is the same as yours The cooper seems to develope streaks in it where itwashes slowly  but relatively shiney coppper where it runs quickly.  No moss on my roof and that was a problem in the past..

For what this is worth, the cedar shingle bureau says copper is good except where acid rain present. They specifically say east of the great lakes.

Personally, I think copper will last as long as any cedar you can buy today.

    Walter -

The only problem I've witnessed is the bottom of 50 y/o copper gutter getting pin holes in it after carrying the run off from cedar it's entire life.

We use shiny copper flashings and gutters with cedar often.

I've also heard that EverGreen is tough to solder.

You see the news this morning? I can't get out of the circle - somebody hit a pole out front. SUV was going at least 80 - the engine is out of it. They weren't in any hurry to load the bodies in the ambulance.http://www.quittintime.com/      View Image
