I am interested in using the copper valley I read about in issue 162 pages 64-71. The author did not mention the gauge of the copper. Does anyone know what it is? And is one pound copper the right choice?

I've never heard it callled that, but yes, the copper I use for flashings and valeys is 16oz to the square foot.

Thanks for all your replys. I did use the 16 oz or 1 lb copper. Bought it at a roofing supply for $89 a sheet. Bent it up in my neighbors garage just like the article said. I hope it lasts me 50 years.
the article said to bend it in your neighbors garage?
wow ... how'd they know your neighbor had a break ...

I have a brake in my garage, but the neighbors never use it.REMEMBER THE BOSTON BATWANGER.
Would you consider moving here? I need a neighbor with one.PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!
I don't know - Va's a pretty state. Just passed thru on the way back from the Outer Banks last Saturday. Didja see me?REMEMBER THE BOSTON BATWANGER.
Lessee, last Sat. I was just returned from Michigan/Ohio and trying to get my bearings back. You drove I 64? Which is 11 miles from here and you didn't stop. Booo...
Neighbor's place is up again (didn't work last yr). Nice 3500' plus an apt plus a huge garage, 18 acres. $1.3m. And a great neighbor, even if she doesn't think much of him. <G> Might be hard to find a crappy enough house to make Sphere happy. Lots of work for the rich&famous.

I was on a mission from God on the way there ( I worked til 11pm bending and left at 5am Sun morning). I was ready to relax. We're heading back in a month or two. We're looking at buying some property on Hatteras. I'll shout out before we go back next time. REMEMBER THE BOSTON BATWANGER.
greencu,
where abouts on the outer banks did you go?
I have been going to Ocracoke since the mid 1960's
( Family business has me skipping the outer banks this year for a week in Boston------but we are making up for it by spending 2 weeks on ocracoke next summer.)
I saw a guy wearing a Howards Pub t shirt up here a week ago----I didn't know wether to burst into tears---or hug him.
Only 51 weeks untill I am back on the island

We had a house on the beach at Nags Head right across from where the casino used to be. 80 year old cottage - wonderful place. We spent a day on Ocracoke. We're pursuing buying some property down there - that's how much we like it. We're looking at property in Waves or Salvo.
I needed some serious R&R and this was the most relaxing vacation I've ever been on. We hooked up with some locals and they lead us to some things we might not have stumbled on otherwise. Did I mention the food? Best seafood I've ever had.
Wonderful place - I see why you go every year. REMEMBER THE BOSTON BATWANGER.
grrencu,
sometime I will tell you about the property my dad DIDN'T buy down there in the late 70's ( stupid, stupid, stupid LOL)
Actually---since I hate seafood----- the food on the outerbanks is a problem for me----and it is really hard to get decent bread there also
I hope to retire there as well,
Stephen

One pound copper would be commonly known as 16 oz copper. 16 oz is pretty much the standard for architectural copper although 20 oz is sometimes used.

"Am I dead or alive? What's this? Linoleum? I must be in hell." -The Salton Sea
Copper wears away over time due to "erosion corrosion"-water eating away at the relatively soft copper.
That being said, then 20 oz. copper would outlast 16 oz. copper since it's 25% heavier .
That being said, then 20 oz. copper would outlast 16 oz. copper since it's 25% heavier .
And 25% more expensive. Why not use 48 oz? That way the valleys will last 'til the earth spins off it's axis and crashes into the sun.

Wow. I guess I hit a nerve.
Your logic makes some sense. When we redo valleys in a slate roof we usually use 20 oz. even though of course it costs more. The extra years gained by using the heavier copper means an expensive repair{mostly labor} can be put further down the road. The cost of 25% more copper is insignificant in the total outlay figured over the life of the repair.
I use 20 oz with slate also. We don't know what type roof the original poster has, but I suspect it's asphalt shingles. There is no reason what so ever to use 20 oz copper with asphalt. I know of 50 year old 16 oz copper roofs that don't show any more wear in the valleys than anywhere else and still have a lot of life in them. You'd know better than me, but there may be some type of reaction from the run off from slate on the copper, similar to what cedar does to it, but to a lesser extent. Most of the old slate roofs around here had terne or galvanized flashings so I don't have a reference point.
As Ali G says"keep it real. Peace".Hey Mister Sushi, you forgot to cook my fish.

I have torn off a couple roofs with copper valeys done in the twenties. Assuming that these were the original valley materials, being pretty totally worn out in the seventies, I wonder if a good average age for 16oz copper ( again assuming that is what they used then) would be fifty years. I just did a GAF 50year roof with copper valleys...?

I think 50 years is probably about right for 16 oz. copper longevity.
It's the waters action of dripping off the edge of either slate or asphalt shingles that wears the copper away over time.My point for using 20 oz. is that the flashings can remain longer if slate or be useful to 2 or 3 asphalt roofs.
That was 20 oz. used in the pictures I sent you on gutter lining.
I'm still trying to figure out how to get my Shutterfly albums posted here.
Idon't remember getting any copper lining shots, but if sent through shutterfly, they get labeled as junk mail in my programs. To send by email direct or include in a post here, go to your shutterfly album or page and then look up at the URL on your browser. Hover over it and right click then choose copy. Then come back to the replyt window here and hit paste ( or ctrl + V) and the url will appear as a link.

Do you suppose the aciddity in "modern" percipitation (at least in some areas) might shorten the life of copper?I see 80-90 year old slate (and asbestos cement) roofs in NW Ohio with copper vallies and flashings whiuch appear to be in good shape

I don't have any facts to base it on, but I believe that statement to be true. About 5 years ago, I put a copper roof on a house about 2 miles away from a coal burning electricity plant. It had started turning green within the 1st year. Normally, it takes about 10 years for the green to start showing around here. REMEMBER THE BOSTON BATWANGER.
What gauge was used on the statue of liberty? and when?I think they made a big mistake when it was refurbished.

I don't know what the article said but copper moves quite a bit. If it is restricted, it will cause bumps. We use clips and keep nails out of the copper.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
I'm doing part of my roof in copper now. I used 16 oz. for most of it, and 32 oz. for the gutters and valleys. 16 is fun and easy to bend, 32 feels like about four times stiffer, and is a bear to work with. One advantage of the 32 is that I can put my feet in the gutters to keep from sliding, with no danger of bending them.
