I got a cordless drill that i really love at a yardsale this summer, and tonight i noticed that there’s pretty visible sparks inside the housing when it’s on. Is this normal? If so, i don’t know why i didn’t notice before.
It’s darned hard to find places that fix tools but I’ll look for one if this drill needs some TLC.
It’s not high-end (a Black and Decker Quantum Pro), but if it bites the dust, it’s going to be a while before i can buy a new one.
Is there a maintenance routine for these things?

Got a Quantum Pro and notice there is fair bit of sparking at the instant of trigger release. Some sort of dynamic brake?
Has always been this way - 2 yrs +. An intermittent, not daily user but it seems ok to me.
good to know; thanks. If you still have your manual, can you tell me if there's any maintenance recommended? are you supposed to oil these things?
I have no idea-
Addendum to my original post...
Mine is Quantum Pro QP180, 18 volt, drill/hammer/driverFound the user manual.
Only maintenance instructions are using mild soap & water to clean. Do not allow moisture into the tool. There are no externally accessible brushes. Repairs should be performed by qualified personnel. I have no parts diagram.Got this from a B&D Service Center in Ottawa Canada--Aside: I bought the drill in the US at a clearance center-- Quantum Pro was positioned/sold by Black & Decker as an intermediate line between the B&D consumer (red-orange case) and DeWalt (yellow case). Supposed to be more "heavy duty" than the consumer range but less expensive than the pro DeWalt. The catalog number for mine is QP180; P/N for the manual is 5100920-03Also gives 1-800-544-6986 for info.this website, http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml02/02234.html notes a recall for some Quantum Pro models. This website, http://www.quantumprotools.com/cs.asp is Quantum Pro dedicated.
thank you all so much; and thank you for the contact info.
sounds like it's not really a problem. I just didn't want to use it if I was gonna wreck it.
Will look into calling service next week.
Don't use that drill around any combustable fumes! :D--------------------------------------------------------

very good point!
Sparking may be normal or may mean that the brushes are going or the armature is bad. The brushes can be replaced (maybe), but there's nothing than can be done for a bad armature.
There's no real maintenance to do on most such units. They're "lifetime" lubricated and many aren't designed to permit brush replacement.
to add on to that if it has brushes, look for a 3/4" diameter black cap with a slot in it
Damn....schooled by a 14YO!
