Does anybody have any thoughts how to store your cordless batteries? Does it hurt them to be left in a unheated shop in the winter when it is freezing?

Try this.
Cool is good. Don't let them freeze. Hot is bad. Don't put them in the fridge as moisture will damage the internals. If your storing them for a period of time if they're Ni cad's just let them go dead. When reserrecting Ni Cads they need 4 or 5 charge/discharge cycles to get up and working.
With Ni Mh give them a charge once a month or they'll suffer damage. Just charge don't discharge them.
With Li-ion, if you spent the money to buy these babies, you would have to presume that they're used regularly
